[AU History] I believe the world is burning to the ground

"Well I believe it all is coming to an end,
Oh well, I guess, we're gonna pretend,
Let's see how far we've come,
Let's see how far we've come!"

Character Name: Loki Laufeyson
Age: 18
Race: Presumed Human [Jotun]
History:
A Jotun child adopted by Odin and Frigga, he is unaware of his non-Asgardian birth. He grew up on Asgard as Thor's younger brother alongside Sif. He started out a happy child with eyes for their mutual friend, Sif, but she seemed less interested in him and more interested in being one of the guys. They all trained, played, and fought together, each striving for their own goals. He idolised Thor for a time until gradually things began to change and shift around him. Much like Sif, Loki began feeling that his brother outshined him in everything he did, so he did everything he could to become Thor's equal. Of course, he never could quite reach the mark. His jealousy of his brother slowly became a blinding demon in his heart that wouldn't let him see past the shadow Thor cast over him.

When it became clear that Thor was the prized son in the eye of their father, those feelings of jealousy festered into something dark and dangerous. A rivalry. He couldn't see that his brother never really saw them as anything but siblings, equals. Loki's inferiority complex grew. Eventually, he returned to his antics of flirting with Sif and after a particularly harsh rejection, Loki's vindictive side caused him to prank her. The end result was the loss of her gorgeous golden locks, leaving her with hair as black as the night sky. To his chagrin, this seemed to make her even more attractive in his eyes. He refused to speak with her for some time after that, and the feeling was likely mutual.

Asgard was threatened with war, calling Odin out to do battle with the warring realm leaving Loki and Thor in the care of Frigga. When she noticed Loki's feelings towards Thor quite by accident, she began teaching Loki the art of magic in an attempt to give him some kind of edge in the hopes of closing the skill gap between them and banishing those feelings. He took to it quickly—quicker than most Asgardians, save for a select few. However, unfortunately for Frigga, it was far too late in the game to wipe away those feelings.

Frigga saw how dangerous the war was becoming on Asgard and persuaded Odin to send the boys to Midgard for safety and perhaps a bit of a lesson in sibling bonding. Away from home, with nothing but eachother, they would have to strengthen their bonds. Left in the hands of the SHIELD Academy's staff, Loki and Thor did grow a bit closer, but it didn't help to correct Loki's jealousy. It just gave him a bit of a dependency on Thor's company. He couldn't imagine being without it, and that made things worse for his inferiority complex. Now, not only was he lesser than Thor in every way, he was dependant on him. He couldn't see that Thor fretted and cared for him. Or that Thor did everything in his power to keep Loki safe and as happy as he could.

Frigga frequently projected herself telepathically to the boys to keep up with them and reassure them they were still loved; however, Loki noted that Odin never once seemed concerned for him. It was always Thor.

His first year in the Academy, he was forced into rooming with Billy Kaplan as their late entry left them with few options to room together. Basically, all the good seats were taken. He found the boy obnoxiously kind and refused to let him in. As the year progressed, however, Billy began breaking down the icy walls around Loki's heart and tried to chip away at the dark feelings suffocating it. He gradually pulled Loki out of his jealousy-fuelled rage and began shaping him into something with more human feelings. Loki didn't notice these changes until he was already far too undone to be anything but the trickster and Billy's best friend. Since that year, he was always ready to jump to Billy's defence and protect him from anyone that even thought about speaking ill of the teenager.

Somehow, all that work on Billy's part to bring a better Loki to light had also given the demigod a better appreciation of Thor. That was something else he didn't realise until much later on. Loki spent his years as a prankster, skipping class and setting up clever schemes that made the teachers' lives difficult, yet amused the other students. He rarely ever laid claim to those pranks when they were executed. He preferred to watch the outcome from the sidelines. Very few people knew the culprit and only one or two could probably recognise his handiwork. Even with his pranks and skipping, Loki still maintained one of the highest grades of his class thanks to his sharp intellect.

When Billy proposed the Magic: The Gathering Club, Loki twisted the rumours of the club, leading people to believe it was actually a club for aspiring spellcasters, leading to the formation of the Magic Club, in which Loki and Billy are both members. With Billy's influences, Loki took on the roll of a social butterfly, using his charm and silver tongue to easily speak with most people he meets. He's had his share of interests in both genders, but never pursued anything serious. He won't admit he still fancies Sif.

Loki opted out of the visit home over the last summer, so he spent his entire time practising magic and learning new spells. The occasional 'call' with his mother, but never his father seemed to keep him in lighter spirits in the absence of his living moral guides. He never thought he would look forward to the return of the school year.
